Intellectualizing Embodiment

Why teaching people to understand their bodies before they trust them might be the very thing keeping them stuck — and what to do instead.

Nervous system regulation. Polyvagal theory. Somatic frameworks. The information is everywhere — and don’t get me wrong, I love all of it.

But somewhere along the way, we started teaching people that they have to understand their bodies before they’re allowed to trust them.

That’s the problem I couldn’t stop thinking about this week.

In this episode, I turned on the mic and followed my own advice — felt my way forward, let it be messy, and said the thing that’s been sitting in my chest. Because the intellectualization of embodiment isn’t just a trend. It’s one of the biggest blocks I see in this industry.

We talk about:

  • Why leading with information first reinforces the very disconnection people come to this work to heal

  • What actually happens when a client skips sensation and goes straight to the label

  • The difference between knowledge supporting felt experience vs. replacing it

  • And why “any feeling fully felt is bliss” might be the most important thing I’ve said on this podcast

This one came from a car ride home from Cleveland, a conversation with my very analytical dad, and something that just needed to land.

Go listen. Then come back and tell me what you noticed.
